Benchmarking of Biosolids and Residuals Handling Operations: Building the Measuring Stick
Abstract
While multiple resources contain benchmarking metrics for total water and wastewater treatment operations, limited data is available specific to solids handling operations. As part of its 2013 Residuals and Biosolids Master Plan, the Town of Cary, North Carolina completed a benchmarking evaluation of its current residuals and biosolids handling operations. This paper highlights the approach used to complete the benchmarking evaluation, including the development of benchmarking metrics at system and program levels using categories consistent with the Water Environment Research Foundation’s publication “Full Cost Accounting Protocol for Biosolids Management”. Based on comparison of metrics for labor, power, chemical and natural gas costs on a dry ton basis for similar solids management facilities, the Town is performing at or better than other similar type and sized facilities, both in water and wastewater. One key exception is the large portion of the water treatment residuals handling overall operating budget set aside for disposal off-site. Findings from this study may be helpful for other utilities whom are interested in assessing their solids handling operational practices.
