Submerged Fixed-Film Packaged Treatment Systems for Small Community Wastewaters
Abstract
The development and testing of a submerged fixed-film system that is environmentally friendly and unique in its configuration, simplicity, and serviceability is presented herein. The system was originally designed to reliably process landfill leachate sequentially through anaerobic and aerobic biomodes with a minimum amount of operator attention. At the time of this adaptation the system described had 10 years of proven performance treating landfill leachates at 12 landfills in the northeastern US. The objective of adapting this submerged fixed-film system to domestic wastewater was to bring the benefits of this unique technology to small communities at an attractive cost.
