THE DESIGN OF INTERMITTENT TREATMENT PROCESSES FOR VARIABLE LOADING CONDITIONS
Abstract
Intermittent and highly variable wastewater and stormwater flows created by rainfall events create new challenges in the field of pollution control. Systems designed for the treatment of combined sewer overflows, sanitary sewer overflows or stormwater must be able to adapt to brief operating periods, long periods of inactivity and a wide range of hydraulic and pollutant loadings. This paper examines the implications of intermittent loadings and operation, and outlines a strategy for the planning and design of treatment systems.
