PLASMA ENERGY PYROLYSIS SYSTEM (PEPS™) FOR DESTRUCTION OF INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER SLUDGES
Abstract
In spite of tremendous advances in pollution prevention, the treatment and disposal of industrial and municipal wastewater sludges remains a complicated as well as expensive undertaking. These wastes often represent an ongoing liability with potential for long-term, adverse affects to soil and groundwater. Vanguard Research, Inc. (VRI) has demonstrated a commercial-scale Plasma Energy Pyrolysis System (PEPS™) as a means to convert such problem waste streams into a clean fuel gas and construction aggregate. Organics are converted to a clean-burning synthesis gas (syn-gas), and inorganics are immobilized in a non-leaching vitreous slag. PEPS™ offers a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable alternative to incomplete waste disposal solutions such as incineration and landfilling. PEPS™ reduces the volume of waste by a factor of approximately 110:1, its mass by approximately 10:1, and does not require any residue to be placed in a hazardous waste landfill. Industrial waste processing problems are resolved permanently, as waste destruction is complete.
