Performance of On-Line Respirometry at the Sanitary District of Hammond
Abstract
This paper discusses the performance of on-line respirometry that acts as an early warning system at the Hammond Sanitary District's (HSD's) publicly owned treatment works (POTW). Biological wastewater treatment plants occasionally fail to perform as intended due to dramatic changes in the influent composition. Sudden changes in influent pH or significant increases in BOD, heavy metals, cyanide, or other toxic substance loading can potentially upset the biological process. HSD's respirometer detects these shock loads before they can affect plant performance. Influent is monitored 24 hours/day and is trended on our plant process control network as shown below.
