PATTERNS AND TRENDS IN THE EVOLUTION OF WATERSHED-BASED ORGANIZATIONS
Abstract
A new form of public participation with respect to natural resource and environmental issues has been rapidly growing since the 1980s. Many of the groups form along geographic boundaries such as watersheds. A database of 1,200 watershed groups in the United States was analyzed to identify regional and national patterns. Variables analyzed include land use, land ownership, water body type, water uses, scope of concern, pollutants, stressors, sources of funding, meeting frequency, stakeholders, goals, and activities. For most variables, there were few significant regional differences.
