A WEB-BASED APPROACH FOR STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are an essential part of analytical operations and training in the laboratory. Writing, updating and archiving SOPs can be a very time consuming task. In Hampton Roads Sanitation District's (HRSD) Central Environmental Laboratory (CEL) there are numerous analytical tests performed. With any change in technique, protocol, or instrumentation there is a possibility changes will not be incorporated into the SOP. To prevent these types of things from being omitted, analysts need a system that is easily accessible in all areas of the laboratory, can be used as a dynamic training tool, and is easily updated and archived.To meet these needs, the CEL developed a web-based, or HTML, SOP system. By utilizing the features available with HTML, all of the SOPs in the CEL can be queried, and are available to analysts throughout the laboratory, project managers, sampling personnel, and others.
