Biosolids Data Management System (BDMS): The Information and Reporting Tool for which the Biosolids Industry has been looking.
Abstract
For years generators and land appliers have complained about the lack of data regarding land application programs in the United States. Annual reports have been generated as part of 40 CFR 503 since 1993. However, the reports submitted for the most part are in various formats and are not in a computerized format that allows easy use of the data. Many of these reports have simply piled up in some unknown corner of an office. The cost and time associated with having the state or federal agencies putting these reports into a computerized database has proven to be considerable and without changes in the process acquisition of the data in a useful format in a timely manner will be highly unlikely. The USEPA has presented a grant to the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association (RMWEA) to educate and encourage generators and land appliers to use the BDMS. Use of the BDMS program will allow the USEPA and States to receive annual reports electronically in the desired format thereby reducing the costs to the USEPA and states. It will also allow generators and land appliers to use BDMS as a management tool to assure compliance with 40 CFR 503. In addition it will accomplish a major goal of the National Biosolids Partnership by providing “up to date” information on biosolids programs throughout the United States with the data being available on it's web page.
