Moving Toward Sustainablity in South Carolina: From the Seminar to the Cemetery

Sustainability is moving forward on many fronts in South Carolina. The state's three research universities anchor a sustainability initiative in higher education, which includes a network of agencies and organizations working on various aspects of sustainability. At the same time, some of the most innovative thinking in sustainability is taking place in businesses headquartered or located in the state. Examples include BMW, whose progressive corporate policies make it an industry leader, and Memorial Ecosystems, Inc., envisioned as a nation-wide system of for-profit nature preserve cemeteries. This paper focuses on the Sustainable Universities Initiative and Memorial Ecosystems, Inc.
