HEAVY METAL UPTAKE BY SLUDGE PARTICULATES: AN EQUILIBROIUM MODEL
Abstract
The presence of heavy metals in the environment is a great public concern due to their know n toxicity to aquatic organisms at trace concentrations. Increasing volume of sludge production and the need for environmentally safe sludge disposal methods have prompted recent attention tow ard heavy metals in sludges. Understanding the mode of heavy metal interactions with sludge particulates is essential to the design of pretreatment processes, management, development, and selection of alternative methods of municipal wastew ater treatment, sludge disposal, and the reuse and discharge of the treated effluent.
