DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRAHIGH-SPEED WASTEWATER FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY USING FLOATING FILTER MEDIA
Abstract
This paper sets forth the results of research into an effective high-speed stormwater treatment system as a measure for improvement of combined sewer systems. Hereinafter, this system is referred to as the “new CSO treatment system” (or simply “new system”).The new CSO treatment system is capable of treating raw water in wet weather without the use of coagulants and can be installed by making use of existing primary settling tanks.A half-year-long proving test in a pilot plant confirmed that the technology could deliver an outstanding treatment performance for suspended solids (SS) and debris while reducing the amount of chemicals used for disinfection. In addition, studies were made of modification of the primary settling tank and water flow in the event of installation of the new system. These studies confirmed that the system could be installed through modification of the existing facilities at wastewater treatment plants. The effects of the new system were estimated on the basis of actual data. The test revealed that even modification of one-fourth of the primary settling tank and use of only half of that as the high-speed filter area would deliver a pollution-reducing effect equivalent to as much as 2 mm in storage. This paper presents the results of this development of ultrahigh-speed wastewater filtration technology as a practical means of improving combined sewer systems.
