BIOSOLID APPLICATION IN URBAN FOREST IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF MONTERREY, MÁXICO
Abstract
metropolitan area of Monterrey has been affected by severe deforestation by urban growth. It is urgent to search for adjacent areas and install urban forest in order to insure that future expansion have green areas especially in semiarid regions like metropolitan area of Monterrey. It is well known that land close to metropolitan area is expensive and scarce, but land relatively far from metropolitan that in five or ten years will be urbanized is available. Urban forest of 45 hectares with native species of trees and grass begun in january of 2002, trees with calipers from 2 to 6” were bought at nurseries and extracted from local forests to be transplanted. Amendment of biosolids and native trees is keystone to success of project. Native trees were utilized because they require less water than introduced or exotic plants, besides they are resistant to regional environment.Servicios de Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey a Water and Wastewater Utility company that has the purpose to reuse the biosolids generated by its Wastewater treatment plants and finance urban forest projects. A private company will donate part of the land, the rest will be from Garcia Municipality. Results indicate that most of the species transplanted responded properly with the amendment of biosolid, others did not benefit and Quercus sp was severely affected by high rates of biosolids.
