Abstract

The US EPA has indicated that significant portions of sanitary sewer overflows are related to the discharge of fats, oils, and greases (FOG). The Kent County, DE Dept. of Public Works believes that from 30–40% of operating and maintenance costs are related to FOG discharges. It has taken efforts to control FOG entering the sewer system. Using a two-pronged approach of education and regulation, Kent County believes that it has begun to control the influence of FOG on its sewer system.
