A PILOT STUDY DESIGNED TO DEFINE THE OPERATING PROTOCOL FOR A MULTIPLE BARRIER MEMBRANE SYSTEM
Abstract
A pilot scale cloth media disk filtration system and microfiltration membrane system were installed in series at the University of California – Davis wastewater treatment plant to process secondary effluent. The purpose of the study was to define the operating protocol for the entire system that would allow for the maximum sustainable membrane flux, while still providing a high quality effluent. Preliminary results indicate that the maximum sustainable flux under predefined operating conditions (i.e., 15 minute process cycle, 24 hour chemical cleaning cycle, and 30 day intensive cleaning cycle) is 75 gal/ft2·day. Future testing includes determination of the maximum process cycle duration and the optimum chemical cleaning cycle frequency, as well as a comparative test using unfiltered secondary effluent at the maximum sustainable flux.
