LOADING UP ON ARSENIC: IMPLICATIONS OF FUTURE DRINKING WATER LIMIT ON WASTEWATER SYSTEMS
Abstract
The upcoming promulgation of the Arsenic Rule will force many potable water utilities to implement new arsenic removal processes in their systems. Many of the impacted utilities are small systems that typically discharge treatment residuals to sewers rather than treating them onsite. This paper presents a characterization of the residuals generated from three arsenic removal processes (coagulation/filtration, adsorption, and ion exchange) and a straightforward mass balance for estimating the future arsenic loading to wastewater treatment plants as a result of potable water utilities implementing the arsenic removal processes. This paper will also discuss the arsenic impacts on the operation of wastewater treatment plants and their effluent and biosolids products.
