Abstract
A pilot scale activated sludge system was used to treat the effluent of an existing aerobic thermophilic bacterial consortium of an organic chemical manufacturer's wastewater treatment system. During the course of operation, significant BOD reduction was observed. Furthermore substantial nitrogen removal was also observed. It was demonstrated that simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was occurring in the continuously aerated activated sludge system. Mass balances were performed demonstrating that up to 48% of the nitrogen was being removed by this system.
