LANDFILL COVER MATERIALS, ODOR AND HUMAN HEALTH
Abstract
This paper explores the odor impact of using processed construction and demolition material (commonly called C&D fines) as cover material. Some landfills using C&D fines have experienced asharp increase in odor complaints associated with high levels of hydrogen sulfide production. Odor sampling data from a landfill that used C&D fines for cover material and then experienced increased odor complaints is presented. Because of the increase in odor complaints, local residents became concerned about their quality of life and potential risk to their health. Odor samples were collected and analyzed and then offsite odor concentrations were modeled to estimate the possible extent of any long-term health risk.
