DYNAMIC SIMULATION OF PUMP STATION OPERATION USING A REAL-TIME CONTROL HYDRAULIC MODEL
Abstract
Pump station operation is one of the most important considerations in operation and maintenance of a long distance sewage conveyance system where multiple pump stations are utilized in series. Hydraulic behaviors of the system are directly related to how these pump stations are operated. Dynamic simulation of pump station operation is a new, innovative approach to sewage conveyance system operation and management. Recently, Chiang, Patel & Yerby, Inc. (CP&Y) developed a hydraulic model for a large-scale sewage conveyance system in Shanghai, China. By integrating actual pump head-capacity curves, the model is capable of simulating multiplepump operation following the automatic pump operation sequence (APOS) that was identified and established during the project. A state-of-the-art real-time control (RTC) module was successfully developed to simulate operation of variable speed (VS) pumps during the simulation. During the project, dynamic simulation of pump station operation was performed using the actual hourly average operating data collected from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system database. The simulation results indicate that the predictions derived by the model and actual operating records dynamically match each other very well. The RTC module for VS pump functioned accurately to simulate the observed operation under the RTC's commands. It can be concluded that the dynamic simulations is reliable and ready for use by operators in assessing their facilities, improving their operation, and developing optimum control strategies.
