PERISTALTIC PUMPS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL MARKETPLACE
Abstract
The most effective engineering solutions are the simplest. The peristaltic pump action is low-shear and is created by compressing the hose or tube between rotating shoes or rollers. In between each pass of shoe, the hose recovers to create a vacuum and draws in fluid. This simple dynamic effect requires no seals or valves and the fluid is totally contained within the hose, separated from the pump. No other positive displacement pump offers this unique separation of pump and fluid.Nothing but the internal hose or tube touches the fluid, eliminating the risk of the fluid damaging the pump. Chemicals or sludge are drawn into ta pump, trapped between two shoes or rollers, and then expelled from the pump. The complete closure of the hose which is squeezed between a shoe and the track gives the pump its positive displacement action, preventing backflow and eliminating the need for check-valves when the pump is not runningThere is no contamination of the pump or fluidIdeal for slurries, viscous shear-sensitive and aggressive fluidsEasy to install, simple to operate, inexpensive to maintainPump design prevents backflow and syphoning without valvesWide range of hose and tubing includes handles all chemicals and sludgesToday's heavy-duty peristaltic pumps are designed to operate 24/7/365 and combine precise PD flow and low maintenance requirements with the ability to handle extremely abrasive and aggressive fluids, which quickly wear out more traditional PD pump technologies. These unique combinations of features prove to be a cost effective solution for PD pumping applications by achieving the lowest possible ‘live cycle cost’.The simple glandless “straight through” construction without valves, vanes or impellers, has clear advantages in handling viscous particulate laden sludges and aggressive chemicals, while the ability to impact minimal shear, combined with the high levels of volumetric accuracy when metering, makes the peristaltic pump and pump of choice for many water and waste water applications.Over the last decade, advancements in hose and tubing materials and the integration of sophisticated electronics including microprocessor controlled robotic grade drives, have led peristaltic pump technology to become the fastest growing type of positive displacement (PD) chemical metering and sludge pump.
