IMPACT OF SUSPENDED SOLIDS ON UV TRANSMITTANCE AND UV DISINFECTION
Abstract
Experiments were conducted to assess the impact of errors in the measurement of UV254 absorbance in secondary effluent on the UV exposure times calculated for UV doses with a collimated beam apparatus. Correlations were developed between total suspended solids (TSS) and UV254 absorbance measured with (R2 = 0.54) and without (R2 = 0.87) an integrating sphere accessory to account for scattered UV light. The impact of neglecting scattered UV light on the relative amount of error in the UV dose increased with the solids content (i.e. TSS) and with the sample volume exposed to UV light (i.e. sample depth). Coliform inactivation data, which demonstrated log-linear tailing inactivation kinetics, were modeled using a double-exponential model.
