Abstract
The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) Water Pollution Control Facilities (WPCF) serving the eastern half of Bergen County, New Jersey has a 412 million liter per day (109 million gallon per day) WPCF which provides contact stabilization mode activate sludge secondary treatment with high rate anaerobic sludge digestion. Because, the BCUA has utilized sustainable energy practices for economic, environmental and energy saving reasons at their faculties for over a decade the BCUA has commissioned the development of a Sustainable Energy Master Plan (SEMP) in which the mission, is to develop renewable energy sources, energy efficiency technologies, energy practices and utilize innovative strategies to achieve their energy and environmental sustainability goals. Building on these efforts, in 2007, the BCUA retained the services of PMK Group, Inc. (PMK) to develop the SEMP whose hallmark is integrating the capacity needs of the BCUA while simultaneously protecting the environment and utilizing energy resources wisely.
