The Technology of Soil Biofilters and Two Case Histories from the City of Tempe
Abstract
Based on performance data from two similar soil biofilters achieving 99.9% odor reduction and hydrogen sulfide removal, soil biofilters in Tempe, AZ have shown that they can be used as primary odor removal systems, and are able to remove hydrogen sulfide concentrations up to 500 PPM with 99% removal efficiency. Data and discussion will be presented from multiple performance test reports. The treatment technology of biofiltration is discussed, as is a case history of each system. With removal rates consistently over 99%, engineering firms can provide their clients an easy to operate and maintain an odor control system that can often eliminate the need for primary wet scrubbers or secondary carbon polishers. A soil bed biofilter can be used in high hydrogen sulfide loading applications as the sole odor removal system, even in sensitive locations such as next to a museum and playground.
