GREENSEAMS: MILWAUKEE'S GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE FLOOD REDUCTION PROGRAM

Abstract

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's (MMSD) innovative Greenseams Program focuses on nonstructural flood management in four watersheds. The Greenseams Program focuses on conserving plots of land (at least 25 acres) with water absorbing soils (hydric) held in private ownership properties in riparian corridors, and mature forested tracts. Landowners meeting one or more of these characteristics are asked to sell either a conservation easement or the full interests in their land. To date, 51 properties have been purchased protecting over 1,600 acres in four urbanizing counties.
