Atlanta West Area CSO Storage Tunnel and R.M. Clayton Pump Station
Abstract
Approximately 20 per cent of the City of Atlanta (COA) is served by a combined sewer system. The system includes four Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Facilities constructed in the early 1990s to meet water quality regulations in effect at that time. Subsequent to the completion of these facilities, water quality requirements were changed by the Georgia EPD and the U. S Environmental Protection Agency. As a result, the COA entered into a federal court ordered Consent Decree to provide additional CSO controls to comply with the new water quality requirements.The additional controls included 13.7 kilometers (km) (8.5 miles) of CSO Storage Tunnels, a large Pump Station and a CSO Treatment Plant.This paper describes the design and construction challenges of the unique R.M. Clayton Pump Station which is a major part of the new CSO collection and treatment system.
