Magnetic Ion Exchange for White Water Treatment and Recycling
Abstract
Australia has been significantly impacted by a serious drought during the last seven years and a leading Australian recycled paper manufacturer set a challenging target of reducing fresh water usage at a recycled paper mill by 20%. The manufacturer identified whitewater from one paper machine for reuse within a second paper machine at the same facility. Numerous technologies were evaluated that would enable recycling of treated whitewater back into the recycled paper manufacturing process, including a magnetic ion exchange (“MIEX®”) technology. Magnetic ion exchange was selected for full-scale installation based on pilot scale results demonstrating true color and charge demand reductions of 74% and 80%, respectively, therefore allowing treated whitewater to be reused for the production of white top liners.
