Sediment Transport in Rivers: Modeling and Potential for Pollutant Association and Transport

Abstract

Sediment transport has the potential to convey considerable contaminants or pollutants. This work shows that sediments are highly variable over the flow depth. Only sampling the surface of flowing streams or rivers can miss 0.6 to 0.997 of the sediment load in the flow. Such data can be corrected by using various sediment transport models that are shown to be quite accurate. These models can predict water depth and velocity, in addition to total sediment loads. Using measured data for sediment loads, this work shows that up to a couple milligrams per liter of pollutants can be associated with transporting sediments.
