Water Quality Modeling of the Upper Mississippi River to Support TMDL Load Allocations
Abstract
In an effort to support the development of a TMDL for Lake Pepin, a linked hydraulic/water quality model framework was developed for the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) upstream of Lake Pepin, between Brainerd (RM 1,000) and Ford Dam (RM 847.7). The results of the modeling will support wasteload allocations for over 300 NPDES facilities in the watershed and may be used in developing trading between point sources as well as point and non-point source trading. The full equation (FEQ) and RCA (row column AESOP) models were selected as the hydraulic and water quality components, respectively, to represent phosphorus dynamics including dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and total particulate phosphorus (TPP).
