Full-scale BioMag Demonstration at the Mystic WPCF and Establishing the Basis-of-Design for a Permanent Installation

A full-scale demonstration of the BioMag process was completed at the 3.3 megaliter per day (ML/d) [0.88-million gallon per day (MGD)] Mystic Water Pollution Control Facility in Stonington, Connecticut from September 2009 through January 2010. The facility is in need of a process upgrade to meet future requirements for effluent total nitrogen and a desktop evaluation of alternatives, which included integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) and membrane bioreactors (MBRs), indicated that the new BioMag process was not only the most space efficient, but also the most cost-effective, sustainable option for implementation at the Mystic WPCF. The process demonstration verified that the BioMag process is capable of meeting the project goals in terms of effluent quality, higher sustainable MLSS concentration and improved settling characteristics.
