Case Study for Integrated Odor Control Using Nitrate Enhanced by Alkaline Material and Anthraquinone
Abstract
Using a novel approach to odor control utilizing both pH adjustment and nitrate addition, a southwest Florida sewage collection system realized a 42% cost reduction as compared with the use of nitrate salts alone. Atmospheric hydrogen sulfide and dissolved sulfide concentrations were controlled to the same levels with the new approach as with the nitrate throughout the system. Addition of anthraquinone to the alkaline material used for pH adjustment further resulted in a 21% decrease in atmospheric hydrogen sulfide concentration at the downstream monitoring point and a drop in dissolved sulfide from 0.2 to 0.0 ppmv at the plant.
