Abstract
High frequency (15-30 minute intervals) dissolved oxygen monitoring within best-available Missouri reference streams identified diel hypoxia patterns with several ecoregions. Low to moderate (0.5 – 1.5 mgO2 m−2 day−1) levels of sediment oxygen demand may be the primary sink causing or contributing to hypoxic conditions during warm-weather low-flow conditions. Understanding processes yielding low D.O. conditions are critically relevant in permitting and use attainability contexts. Implications of low D.O. and ambient-based criteria within Clean Water Act programs are discussed and explored.
