Wastewater Challenges for Small Island Nations: A Case Study in Bermuda
Abstract
A new Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) using MBR technology was designed and constructed to replace the failing existing WWTP. The reclaimed water produced by the WRF is of high quality and is used as flushing water within the Royal Naval Dockyard. The flushing water accounts for a third of the total flow, and simultaneously reduces potable water production.Compromises and tradeoffs considered in the design, which include process flexibility and complexity versus simplicity, automation and instrumentation versus manual operations, and the use of advanced technology at a remote site are presented. The first six months of performance data are also presented.
