Abstract
The goal of this research project was to identify the effectiveness of a novel surfactant–protein complex, known as Accell, manufactured by Advance Biocatalytics (ABC), to provide odor and corrosion control in a trunk sewer and pump station. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has long been known to be primarily responsible for odor and corrosion problems in collection systems. Dosage rates of 5, 7, and 10.5 gallons per day of Accell were added to the East Side Interceptor and Northeast Boundary sewer as it entered the Main Pump station, which resulted in estimated concentrations of 0.09, 0.13 and 0.19 mg/L of Accell in the raw wastewater. The impact of Accell addition was monitored at six sites in the East Outfall sewer which feeds the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant from May through August 2011. At the dosage rates applied in this study, that was limited primarily due to the cost of the product being tested, there did not seem to be an effect on hydrogen sulfide production during peak summer temperatures. However, there seemed to be a drastic decrease in the total suspended solids over the course of the project, which could lead to significant savings in plant operating costs.
