Enhanced Nutrient Removal Upgrade of the Winebrenner Wastewater Treatment Plant Using BioMag™ Technology
Abstract
Upgrading municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Chesapeake Bay region to achieve enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) annual limits of 4 mg/l total nitrogen (TN) concurrently with 0.3 mg/l total phosphorus (TP) has created a demand for innovative and cost- effective treatment technologies. BioMag™ ballasted activated sludge technology utilizes magnetite as ballast, enabling reactors to operate at high mixed liquor (MLSS) concentrations and rapidly settle the floc with a high ballast recovery percentage. A pilot test was conducted to assess its feasibility to achieve ENR without effluent filters. The Four-Stage Bardenpho Process with BioMag™ technology was operated for varying influent loading conditions at a MLSS concentration of 10,000 mg/L between 6 – 11°C, achieving TN
