Real Time Savings: Transforming Real Time Hydraulic Data into Actionable Information
Abstract
Technological advancements in hydraulic flow and level monitors have revolutionized the way that collection systems are managed. These sophisticated devices are currently used for design analysis, model calibration, compliance reporting, and billing applications. However, much remains to be learned on how to use the data generated by these devices. The main issue remains in the fact that data is not information. This paper discusses a new methodology to transform real time data into real time actionable information. This technology, called real time analysis, has transformed the way that utilities do maintenance, design, and operations of sewer networks. The City of South Bend, IN will be used to demonstrate the capabilities of real time analysis. It will show how real time analysis has changed traditional operation and maintenance (O&M) to condition-based O&M by increasing inspections based on hydraulic performance, and decreasing the number of emergency calls.
