Designing a Helping Hand for Arcata Natural System, City of Arcata Wastewater Treatment Facility (AWWTF) Improvements Project

The Arcata Wastewater Treatment Facility (AWWTF) improvement project will allow the facility to meet projected capacity and new permit limits, to address future sea level rise, address deferred maintenance, while maintaining the existing natural treatment system benefits. The existing land based pond and wetland system has met the community’s economic needs for more than 30 years. Benefits include: sustainable wastewater treatment, marsh and wildlife sanctuary development, recreation amenities. Currently Carollo Engineers is completing the design of a plant rehabilitation and upgrade project that will upgrade the natural pond and wetland treatment system and meet increasingly stringent discharge requirements. A new nutrient removal secondary treatment system will be integrated into the existing natural system.
