Description: Calculating Detention Time (SI)
Calculating Detention Time (SI)
Detention time is the period of time that a wastewater flow is retained in a basin, tank, or reservoir for storage or completion of physical, chemical, or biological reaction. Detention time is sometimes referred to as contact or retention time. Detention time is calculated by determining the volume of the container (tank, wetwell, pond) and dividing it by the flow in liters per second (lps), minute (lpm), hour (lph), or day (lpd).
