Christian Tasser has over 20 years of experience in water and wastewater projects as research and design engineer as well as project manager. Mr. Tasser has managed various upgrades and expansions of Industrial and Municipal water/wastewater and biogas plants. Mr. Tasser has experience in Europe and USA working on food waste to energy facilities. He has served in many roles including project manager, project engineer, and as the lead on industrial biogas plants operations and start-up including the Inland BioEnergy plant at RP-5 SHF in Chino.

Abstract

This paper was presented at WEFTEC 2023 in Chicago, IL.

This paper illustrates planning-level analyses that utilities can use to develop the most sustainable and resilient Energy Master Plans using digester gas (DG) and food waste co-digestion to find the most beneficial digester gas use options and integrate renewable energy sources including solar photovoltaics and energy storage. A novel approach using the Blue Plan-itÂ® modeling tool in combination with solar PV (Helioscope) and microgrid modeling (HOMER Grid) is presented.

Master Plan Shows the Way Forward for Sustainable Food Waste Co-digestion and Beneficial Biogas Utilization Options

Abstract

This paper will help define the issues around food waste quality but also find strategic solutions to address the questions about digester and biogas processing capacities for co-digestion. A strategic approach and tools were developed to assist agencies with the decision making process to determine revenues and costs for various biogas utilization options. Different outcomes resulting from local infrastructure, access to renewable natural gas (RNG) vehicle fleets and incentives are demonstrated for a case study in southern California; the City of Riverside. An interactive, user-friendly Blue Plan-it® decision-making tool was developed to evaluate the feasibility and existing digester capacity as well as the costs of food waste co-digestion while increasing the biogas yields and revenues. The tool calculated the return on investment (ROI) of up to five biogas utilization projects with varying input variables based on current incentives.

This paper focuses on the approach and tools developed to assist agencies with the decision-making process and to determine revenues for food waste co-digestion and costs for various biogas utilization options.
