Beyond Energy Neutrality Program: Achieving Energy Independence in a Large Water Resource Recovery Facility
Abstract
Energy is only second to labour in terms of the costs of used water management for most utilities. In addition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to energy consumption in these facilities is becoming a more common goal for these utilities. This paper presents a case study on how a water utility has implemented successfully an energy optimization program at its largest water resource recovery facility that has led to it producing 150% of the energy it needs to provide advanced nutrient removal.
