Development of an Approved Hartford Integrated Plan: A Delicate Balance of Separation, Tunnel Storage, and Watershed Management
Abstract
The Metropolitan District (District) provides water and sewer services to approximately 400,000 people in the Hartford, CT region. The sewer system includes 1,960 kilometers of pipe dating back to the mid-1800s. For two decades, planning and implementation of the District’s Clean Water Project has included $2 billion in expenditures reducing four million m3 of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in a typical year by more than half. Recently, the District developed an Integrated Plan to address the remaining CSOs over the next four decades based on lessons learned from completed projects.
