Local Biomass Resource Utilization in Sewage Treatment Plants in Japan - Eniwa city, Hokkaido -
Abstract
Efforts to accept local biomass resources including food waste in sewage treatment plants are spreading across Japan, and technological knowhow and project schemes are key to these efforts. However, to maximize the potential of biomass resources, it is also essential to have strong administrative skills to obtain understating and cooperation from residents who provide these resources.Eniwa city has accepted and treated local biomass (food waste, night soil, and johkasou sludge) in sewage treatment plants since 2012. Sewerage-related and waste-related departments are collaborating, as are government and residents. A high level of citizen awareness and effort has enabled an appropriate sorting practice for food waste. Especially, this city has a groundbreaking program that sorts and collects food waste produced by the residences and achieves approximately 90% rate. This report provides the implementation background, business contents, technology features, implementation effects, and government and civic efforts for Eniwa City.
