How OCSD Identified the Most Detectable Odorants
Abstract
The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) approached its Odor Control Master Plan from a different view point than usual. Cognizant that odors are caused by compounds besides hydrogen sulfide, it embarked on a wide sweep of sampling and analysis of all plant process areas to determine the top offenders. In that effort, analytical and sensorial methodologies were used, generating a large number of results. This paper discusses the procedure OCSD uses to determine what odorants are “most detectable” among the large number of results obtained.
