Wastewater Management in the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District
Abstract
The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District) manages the water resource planning within the 15 county metro Atlanta are and includes over 50 wastewater utilities. The Metro Water District’s Wastewater, Water Supply and Water Conservation, and Watershed Plans form an integrated compilation of required action items for its member utilities and jurisdictions to complete prior to permit approval by the state.There are approximately 16,000 miles of sewers and more than 450,000 manholes within the Metro Water District. Sewers and manholes within the Metro Water District range in age from new to over 100 years old. As these systems continue to age, proper inspections and maintenance are critical. Inspections and maintenance not only maintain a high level of customer service, but also protect water quality. Identifying and correcting collection system deficiencies in conjunction with overflow spill response programs may help local water bodies meet State water quality standards.The Metro Water District’s Wastewater Management Plan contains measures for wastewater management including:Sewer systems inventory and mappingSewer systems asset managementSewer system inspection programSewer system maintenance programSewer system rehabilitation programCapacity certificationGrease Management ProgramSewer System Overflow Emergency Response Program andSewer Systems Inspection and Maintenance Training
