After the 104 Days and 104 Nights: Improvements to the N. 28th Stormwater Pumping Station Following the 2011 Missouri River Flood
Abstract
Prompted by historical conveyance system flooding and the Missouri River Flood of 2011, the City of Council Bluffs, Iowa proceeded with the replacement of the N. 28th Stormwater Pumping Station. The project included permitting with the United States Army Corps of Engineers for improvements in the critical zone of the Missouri River Levee. Based on previous vandalism at the site, the design included measures to prevent vandalism in the future. During the design phase, the project evolved in two ways. Formed suction intakes were used to reduce the footprint of the pumping station. Also, the project was phased to allow for future capacity improvements to stay within funding from a sales tax initiative.
