Succession Planning: Bridge to the Utility of the Future
Abstract
To effectively support the community’s growth and sustainability into the 21st century, Louisville MSD’s 2014 strategic plan resulted in strategies designed enhance employee and leadership development. As the rate of loss of institutional knowledge continues with the retirement of Baby Boomer generation employees, a multi-programmatic approach was adopted to develop leadership and technical skills from within to enable continuity of successful achievement of the organization’s mission across this workforce transition. Along with a structured and formalized leadership development program (Aspire), a succession planning process was initiated to help identify where potential gaps in leadership existed within the organization. Utilizing data garnered from the process, strategies for filling the gaps can now be implemented, such as training, job shadowing, and where necessary, plans for recruitment of external talent. Ultimately, the process enables existing leadership to develop a workforce roadmap to the future.
