A Review of Upstream Processes That Effect UV Disinfection
Abstract
Ultraviolet irradiation is widely used for disinfecting wastewaters that are being reused or discharged into receiving bodies of water. The advantages of UV disinfection are that it does not produce a chemical residual and it inactivates almost all of the viruses, Giardia and Cryptosporidium and it is not affected by ammonia in the water. If UV disinfection is not applied properly or the wastewater is not treated to the correct standard then UV will not meet the disinfection requirements. This paper will review the various upstream factors that affect the UV disinfection of wastewater.
