Bigger, Better, Brighter: UV Inactivation with New Technology Integral to Melbourne's Advanced Tertiary Treatment Upgrade
Abstract
Melbourne's Eastern Treatment Plant was upgraded through the implementation of an advanced tertiary treatment plant. The existing activated sludge secondary treatment plant was augmented by additional treatment comprising pre-ozone, biological media filtration, post-ozone, UV and chlorine. The UV facility, designed to provide a 4-log inactivation of Cryptosporidium, is equipped with the TrojanUVFlex™ disinfection system, whose innovative design and validation strategy were key elements in the successful implementation of UV disinfection at the Eastern Treatment Plant. The advanced tertiary upgrade significantly improved the discharge quality of the facility, reducing its impact on the receiving marine environment and creating a high quality recycled water resource suitable for a broad range of non-potable applications. The Eastern Treatment Plant's advanced tertiary treatment plant is amongst the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in the world.
