A BUOYANT CONVECTIVE FLUX CHAMBER FOR MEASURING LIQUID SURFACE EMISSIONS
Abstract
Odor-related complaints and emissions of toxic gases have become a major issue in the swine industry. Outdoor manure storage facilities such as anaerobic lagoons are a major contributor to odor complaints as they usually emit large amount of air pollution compared to other parts of the facility. Field measurements of gas and odor emissions are needed to evaluate baseline emissions of existing facilities and the effectiveness of odor abatement technologies. A buoyant convective flux chamber (BCFC) for measuring odor and gas emissions from liquid surfaces was designed, constructed and tested at Purdue University. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the BCFC. Odor and gas emission measurements with the BCFC appeared to be consistent and repeatable based on the results of these tests.
