BIOSOLIDS IN MÉXICO SUCCES STORY
Abstract
Research in grains and vegetable crops were conducted in the experimental station located in the WWTP in Dulces Nombres in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Treatments consisted in comparing liquid and dewatered biosolids versus inorganic fertilizer and control in four sowing seasons. Variables evaluated included yield, heavy metal concentration in edible portions and extractable and total metal concentration in soil. Results indicate that liquid biosolid had immediate beneficial effect in yield, dewatered biosolid had the beneficial effect after second sowing season. Residual effect in yield was observed in liquid and dewatered biosolid even after three and four sowing seasons respectively. Heavy metal concentration in edible portions and soil are below tolerance limits in all treatments and sowing seasons. Certification of biosolid was obtained for the first time in Mexico and the commercial product name is “NUTRIREGIO”. National projects concerning urban parks and nurseries using native species are being initiated utilizing biosolid as topsoil amendment to improve soil fertility with the objective to improve life in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey which has being suffering of deforestation for decades.
