REINVENTING SCADA IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Abstract
The City of Lansing, Michigan developed an innovative SCADA system to control two activated sludge wastewater treatment plants, five major pump stations, 23 minor pump stations, and two storm water pump stations. The new system replaced traditional hardwired control panels with loop controllers, switches, pilot lights, annunciators, and chart recorders. This effort began with a study phase that established boundary conditions, evaluated and reviewed numerous hardware and software technologies, and completed a basis of design. The system was designed, constructed, and programmed to meet all design criteria and other features were added as the implementation phase progressed. The result was a technologically advanced and upgradeable SCADA system that can be expanded and refined to meet the city's future needs.
