Wet Weather Treatment Pilot Testing: High Rate Clarification and UV Disinfection in a Cold Climate
Abstract
The City of Toledo's Bay View WWTP is required by a Consent Decree to construct a wet weather treatment facility, that when completed (2007-2008) will double the existing treatment capacity from roughly 200 MGD to 400 MGD. The wet weather treatment improvements will consist of fine screening, grit removal, high-rate clarification (HRC), flow equalization, and disinfection. Flow treated by the new wet weather facility will be blended with the dry weather (secondary treatment) plant flows prior to discharge. It is anticipated that upon start-up, the facility will be the largest high rate clarification system in North America. As part of the initial design phase, pilot testing of Actiflo and Densadeg high rate clarification systems followed by medium pressure and low pressure high output ultraviolet disinfection systems was performed. The primary goals of the testing were to evaluate the performance and operational parameters of the high rate clarification systems and assess the feasibility of coupling HRC and UV technologies. Results of the testing demonstrated that both Actiflo and Densadeg are capable of treatment of primary influent and wet weather flows for total suspended solids (TSS) and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD5) under a variety of operating conditions.
